How The Sierra Club is Making A Difference

There are many organizations that work to “save the world” But none are so well know and hard working as the Sierra Club. Working primarily to promote solutions to global warming, the Sierra Club's focus is predominantly on reducing the use of fossil fuels. Through these initiatives the Sierra Club hopes to educate and aid the conversion of both consumers and corporations to alternative fuels. Unmatched in their tenacity, the Sierra Club is undeniably making a difference.

The Sierra club has launched a Cool Cities campaign recently and the results were phenomenal and ongoing. In this campaign they have enlisted local leaders like mayors, governors and county commissioners, even everyday people, to make the commitment to stop global warming and start pushing for energy solutions. The leaders who have gotten involved sign the U.S. Mayors Climate Protection Agreement. This agreement outlines specific environmental commitments an individual politician makes when signing the agreement. It also encourages them to seek their own individual solutions for betterment of their own city.

Leaders are taking hold and embracing the opportunity to reach out to an new population of environmentalist and to educate the public about the dangers that we are facing and how that we can change the direction in which we are heading by taking simple steps in our own lives and on an even larger scale how businesses can take steps to also improve their stance in the environmental “war”.

The Sierra Club recognizes the needs of certain groups of people. Shifting out of Reverse is an initiative that proves this point. They acknowledge that certain workers such as farmers and carpenters need their trucks, but offer a solution with this program that helps them keep their trucks while helping the environment. “Shifting out of Reverse” educates them about an off the shelf device that can be installed in light trucks. This devise not only improves their gas mileage, but it helps the environment and economy as well; one simple step that we can do to make a huge difference.

The Safe and Healthy Communities conservation initiative is another way the Sierra Club is aiding in the betterment of our communities. This initiative aims to aid in the facilitation of making sure every community has clean water and air. They work on the state and local level to address water pollution and clean up efforts. Other programs like Sewage 101, Your Drinking Water at Risk, The Sierra Club's Water Sentinels Program, Where Rivers are Born, Groups Demand Action on Gender-Bending Chemicals and Building Better II are also part of this initiative.

America's Wild Legacy is an initiative that aims a protecting and conserving America's wildlife. The initiative attempts to reach citizens from all classes and educate them about the protection of public land from misuse. It also attempts to block threats to wildlife that occur with commercialization and other causes. Specific areas of focus include Polar Bears in Danger, Giant Sequoia At Risk, Endangered Species, Coastal Protection and Protection of our National forests. These are the things that most of us relate to and use regularly and therefore the public is more aware of these initiatives.

American’s are not the only one’s who need guidance in the effort to preserve the environment. All over the world, we need “global reform”. The Sierra Club also reaches out internationally to spread the message of global warming and conservation. With several programs including Global Population and the Environment, Responsible Trade, Human Rights and the Environment and many more. With an international committee dedicated to taking their message global the Sierra Club is well underway in their fight for global justice.
